Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras 85mm lens for Nikon SLR cameras
Customer Review: Solid lens, expensive, NO LENS Pouch!
The bad:
Major dissapointment not to have a lens bag, Nikon went cheap on this one.
The lens hood is metal and screw style mount, it is a hassle. You got to be very careful as it is metal to metal threads, so you better screw it in right to prevent permanent damage.
I bought it from Adorama and had no tamper seal, so keep an eye on that…
The good:
Excellent picture quality, very sharp, solid like a tank. I only wish the lens hood was bayonet style.
Customer Review: Sleeper lens! Great for Portraits on an AP-C format body.
This lens is rediculously good for its price. You get WAY more than you pay for on this one. I use this lens so much I cannot believe it still works. Check out some of my immages under the lens picture at the top of this page and on my profile.
IQ: Super sharp and GREAT bokeh for you bokeh psychos…like me. Contrast is very good and distortions well controlled. Did I say sharp?
At f1.8 I did experience some halo effects around very bright contrasty areas but I only experience this effect with a filter on. It handles flare well and I can only produce it when the sun is in the center “sweet spot” of the lens. Example of this flare is on my profile. I had to really try for it though.
Build Quality: Old D style, camera motor driven so will not autofocus on a D40-D60. It is an Fx format lens so will work on both Dx and Fx bodies. Focusing speed is surprisingly fast even though it uses the camera AF motor. Metal lens mount and metal body. Most of the lens is metal as a matter of fact but not noticably heavy. Can still use the onboard flash of my D300 without casting a shadow. This lens is long due for an upgrade to a “G” lens but for the price, the value is extraordinary.
Pro glass on a beer budget.
